Garden Formulas

Mulch, Compost, Alfalfa, and Rain.  Natures way and boy can I vouch for it.  As for Insecticides, I have found Neem oil to be outstanding.  Now here are some other folks magic formulas.  I do not vouch for them.   Several sources have recommended mixing one tablespoon of vinegar per gallon in all fertilizer, or herbicide, or insecticide formulas to compensate for Gulf Coast water chemistry.   Also, some kind something should be added such as Spreader Sticker, CocoWet to help the sprays stick to the plant leaves long enough to be absorbed.

From Strictly Hibiscus comes this fertilizer program

Fertilizing Program

If you would like more information about the Space City Fertilizer click on the image:

A good fertilizing program is beneficial for a number of reasons. The first and foremost is STRONG and HEALTHY plants. A plant that is well fed will handle stress and adversity better than a plant that is undernourished and wimpy.

About our fertilizing program:

1. We start off with a top-dressing of either

(This fertilizer will be applied at the high rate, which is approximately ONE OUNCE per gallon of pot size)

2. Our top dressing is supplemented by a foliar spray once a week (twice during show season). We use the Space City 18-10-28 for the weekly spraying. During show season, the second spraying will be either Peter's 20-20-20 or Peter's 10-50-10. This is to provide extra phosphorous to help promote bud development.

With hibiscus, it is not common practice to use a fertilizer with a high middle number as a soil drench. It has been theorized that high amounts of phosphorous can lock up needed nutrients in the soil.

3. The BEST part of our fertilizing program is this step. Every three weeks, we mix a solution that is:

We mix this in concentrate and use a siphon mixer to apply it as a soil drench to our plants. This formula can be broken down and mixed in smaller amounts.

This is a good combination of Chemical and Organic fertilizers. The added epsom salts will also help your plant stay green, and can help with seedpod retention during hybridizing season. The organic fish emulsion helps activate beneficial microorganisms and bacteria in your soil. The Superthrive is added just because it is supposed to work, and I don't have any proof that it doesn't.....

Herbicide Formulas

Round up Herbicide is a molecule that is very suseptible to metal salts. Calcium, magnesium, iron or other minerals in your water that can add to the hardness of water will deactivate large amounts of the Round up molecules before you are able to use them. A very good way to eliminate this problem is to mix dry Ammonium Sulfate fertilizer into the water before adding Round up. The labeled rate for this is 17.0 lbs of Ammonium Sulfate per 100 gallons of water this is 2.8oz per gallon of water.
